- Shred receipts, old bank statements and unused credit card offers.
- PIN numbers and passwords should be unique. Avoid using date of birth. Avoid carrying them with you. [most popular passwords are “password” and “12345”] Don’t do this.
- Do not throw out old computer, smartphones and tablets. Hard drives need to be destroyed.
- Do not put full credit card account number on a receipt. Only put last 4 digits.
- Never put social security numbers on checks.
- Review all bank and credit card statements.
- Check your credit report history at least once per year. This is a free service.
- Consider using a credit monitoring service. This service will give you updates on all changes to your credit files.
- Do not mail checks or personal information from your mailbox.
