As a Private Investigator, I would like to thank all social media websites and applications. While researching a person’s background, social media has become an important component. Whether it is for a employment backgrounds, a personal injury case or an infidelity case, the use of social media by private investigators has skyrocketed during the past several years. In regards to Infidelity cases, social media has led to the following:
- Married men/women meet through common groups and start relationships
- Ex-girlfriends/boyfriends relationships are rekindled
- High school friends are reacquainted and start new/old relationships
- Office workers and community groups partners are connected
As an Investigator, I have heard many stories on how a spouse how met someone else on social media and is having an affair. Some of the ways we monitor activity is as follows:
- Constant “check in’s” by the cheater or new love interest. Even if the two are no longer friends on a social media site, they both may check into the same place. Stupid…Yep. But it happens.
- Facebook changes privacy settings and all people are not aware. Settings are set to public for anyone to see. Investigators do not have to be friends with the person to know where they are or who they are with.
- If setting is set to private, there are ways into their profile and news feed and pictures. Through a friend’s profile that is set to public is one way.
- The office party/happy hour is a great one for investigators. Many co-workers post pictures from the get together and we can see how cozy the cheating spouse is with his “friend.”
These are just some ways we look into social media to help in the infidelity investigation. Do you own research and start making screen prints or copies of pictures because after the affair starts, they will disappear from your spouse’s profile.
