The summer is a fun time for most families as they take vacations, long weekend trips and are not home every night. It is also a fun time for thiefs, especially with identity theft. Safeguards to combat theft or fraud are as follows:
- When traveling out of town for any length of time, stop mail and newspaper deliveries. Don’t just ask a neighbor because you never know when they will pick up your mail/newspapers.
- Make your home look like there is someone home. Put lights on timer and water outside lawn/plants regularly.
- Notify local law enforcement of your vacation. Police will check periodically on your property.
- Set up alerts on your phone for credit card and debit card charges.
As a private investigator, I receive many calls on identity theft. A lot of times, the information is obtained from stolen mail. DO NOT send checks or letters with personal information through your unsecured mailbox. Use the blue USPS mailbox or a more secured mailing procedure.
